Portico is a digital preservation service provided by ITHAKA, a not-for-profit organization with a mission to help the academic community use digital technologies to preserve the scholarly record and to advance research and teaching in sustainable ways. Portico is among the leading digital preservation services in the world. Portico is one of several initiatives at ITHAKA aimed at preserving the scholarly record. ITHAKA is also home to JSTOR, founded in 1995 to help libraries convert their print collections to digital format and to share the costs and responsibility for long-term preservation of that content, and to Ithaka S+R, a strategy and research group that focuses in part on providing libraries with strategic advice on how to manage their collections, locally and globally, and to move in a deliberate, systematic, and cost-effective way toward electronic-only collections.
